Edward Snowden, an NSA system administrator, begins releasing documents revealing the NSA’s massive data collection. His tactics, dubbed a “drag net” by the media, stunned the growing online giant, as users now knew the extent of his (Harding) government’s access. It’s hard to say if Edward Snowden was created for this time. A talented and self-taught programmer, he seems to perfectly embody the digital age. He also includes an old-fashioned desire for small government and the protection of personal liberty. Snowden is an anomaly, perhaps the antithesis of the NSA’s moral audacity to be the nicest person to release classified documents. But, because of his righteousness, Edward Snowden should be forgiven.
Snowden took an additional legal route to release his documents, but there is evidence to suggest that he may have blocked public communication by addressing his ‘Congress in protest. He saw it for himself when Thomas Drake, a top NSA official, couldn’t get a response from Congress. His goal was to inform them of the waste, illegal activities and mismanagement he had seen during his seven years there (Smith).
Frustrated, Drake took complaints about him to private reporters. Like Snowden, he was extremely careful, distributing the emails he sent back and forth so that he couldn’t find them. Unfortunately, his efforts failed. In 2010, he was tried under the World War I Espionage Act, which could have landed him up to 35 years in prison (Smithsonian). Although his final sentence would be a year of probation and 240 hours of community service, he was devastated professionally and financially. The Drake incident is a clear warning against using government channels to report (1).
