Life gets in our way sometimes, we all know it. But after some relentless dodging and poor social decisions, his brain finally realizes that he’s reached that point in every graduate’s life where he needs to start his dissertation. Oh, and did I mention that you only have two weeks to do it?
Well, we’re only talking about 8,000 words, right? Easy enough, I guess… no. So turn off your phone, delete Facebook, break up with your friends, and prepare to enter a solitary life for the third year. Here is our survival tool for you:
Do not count on your educational advisor
Your educational advisor will not give you all the answers.
Some advisors are too busy to provide you with adequate support or are micro-admins who want daily updates on their progress.
Write every day and in parts
The general rule of thumb for completing a 10,000-15,000 word thesis in just 14 days or less is to write one, every day, and do it in parts. Instead of trying to write 4,000 words or more at one time, try to limit yourself to finishing 2,000 words a day without fail.
You will need effective monitoring practices to do this in a timely manner.
It means writing in a distraction-free space so you can achieve your daily goal. If you can’t focus in your bedroom, for example, go to the park, your local library, or your school library and write from there.
Is 2 weeks really enough?
When you think about the importance of a thesis and the fact that it can make the difference between getting your degree or not, the question is not so much if you can write a thesis in 2 weeks, but if. Students are known to be masters of procrastination, but with something this important, it might not be a good idea to leave it to the last minute. We always recommend that you start your thesis as soon as possible in order to produce your best work.
However, just because something isn’t recommended doesn’t necessarily mean it can’t be done. If you find yourself in a situation where you only have a few weeks left, it goes without saying that you should have started earlier. For some reason, you only have two weeks left, so you can only use that time wisely. It’s doable, but it will take a solid 2 weeks of hard work and planning with no delays!
