What is a doctorate?

PhD (sometimes seen as Ph.D.) comes from the Latin term philosophiae doctor, which designates a doctor of philosophy.

A doctorate can be awarded for basic research in any field, not just medicine. Compared to an MD, a doctorate in medicine focuses on searching for new knowledge rather than applying existing knowledge.

A.O.A.

Alpha Omega Alpha, commonly known as AΩA, can be considered the “Phi Beta Kappa of medical schools”. As the only national medical honor society, its mission, developed over the past century, is to recognize and enhance professionalism, academic excellence, service and leadership within the profession.

The criteria and restrictions regarding election to the AΩA are listed in the statutes. These elections are held annually in the 124 chapters of the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the American University of Beirut. In 2006, as in previous years, nearly 3,100 medical students and a much smaller number of faculty members, residents and alumni were elected. Since its creation in 1902, more than 100,000 members have been registered on the lists.

Getting an undergraduate degree

Before you can even go to medical school, you have to get an undergraduate degree. Although some think you have to choose a specific major, all majors are welcome to apply to the best medical schools. If you decided late in your college career as an undergraduate to take the plunge and become a surgeon, you can still go to medical school if you major in something like business administration or finance.

If you want to improve your chances of earning an MD degree, you need to take the right types of courses. Experts recommend that you choose programs like chemistry or biology as your major, but that doesn’t mean that the humanities and social sciences won’t come in if they take the right course load. During your studies, you have to study the right subjects. When it comes to training to be a doctor, the following applies: the more science courses, the better. You must at least:

  • biology 1 year
  • 1 year English
  • 1 year physical
  • 2 years chemistry
