Introduction For the first paragraph of an essay to be a good introduction (in other words, to qualify as a good introduction), it must do two things. Those two things are: 1) Submit a thesis statement. 2) Provide an essay outline or outline for the essay. So what do these two things mean? 1) A thesis statement is the sentence (or sometimes sentences) that tells the reader what the author’s position is. When you receive an essay question, the thesis statement is your clear and concise answer to the question. For example, if your essay question was “What were the causes of the Holocaust during World War II?” your thesis statement would be something like “There were many complex and interrelated causes of the Holocaust, including the German economy, fascist ideology, and Hitler’s personal racism”. A “thesis” is an “argument,” so the thesis statement indicates what the argument of the essay is, or what argument (or opinion) the author of the essay presents to the readers. 2) An introduction should include all the main points that will be discussed in the essay. Argumentative essays must provide supporting or supporting evidence for the thesis statement. This means that you must provide evidence to support your answer to the essay question. So if your essay is about the causes of the Holocaust, and your essay will discuss six main causes (two paragraphs each), your introduction should list (or introduce) each of those six main reasons. So, an essay map or outline is just a list of topics that your essay will cover. This list is usually attached to your thesis statement or comes immediately after it. Topic Sentences When writing an essay, you should use “topic sentences.” They are phrases that go at the beginning of each paragraph in which you are going to talk about a new topic. So in the example we saw in the Holocaust essay, I mentioned that the essay will discuss six reasons for the Holocaust and each reason will have two paragraphs. That means every second paragraph would use a “topic sentence” because it would go on to discuss another reason for the Holocaust. Here are sample topic sentences for the sample essay: “The most important reason for the Holocaust was the economic situation in Germany.” Another reason the Holocaust occurred was because of Hitler’s personal views.” to the reader what the paragraph will be about (what will be the next point to be discussed in the essay) and also what the paragraph will refer to.
This gives the essay Flow smoothly and show that it is well organized so that you can tell what the topic of the first body paragraph is by reading the subject sentence, which is the first sentence of the paragraph. Closing Sentences A concluding sentence goes at the end of a paragraph or topic. , and it summarizes for the readers what was discussed and connects it to the question.So if you used the topic sentence “The most important reason for the Holocaust was the economic situation in Germany” and then wrote one or more paragraphs dealing with this topic, your concluding sentence might be: “So you can see that the economic situation in Germany is the most important reason for the Holocaust. ” Topic sentences and concluding sentences precede and follow your paragraphs like a sandwich, guiding the reader through your essay.
