In general, courses start about a month later at British universities than at American universities. For example, classes at Georgetown in the fall of 2021 start on August 25 and at UCL they start on September 27. Classes also end about a month earlier in the spring. In Georgetown, May 3 is the last day of classes for the 2021 academic year and exams end May 13. At UCL, classes end on March 25. All of this means that the academic year is a bit shorter by 2 months in the UK than in the US
At UCL, in the Hispanic Studies department, classes met once times a week for two hours. This meant I only had to be on campus four hours a week in the fall and two hours a week in the spring. The lessons were discussion-based and the only assignment was to complete the readings so that you were ready to participate in the discussion. This class structure is quite common in the UK. You are also not expected to spend as much time on campus as in American universities. Tons of people showed up for his two-hour class, which was the only time they spent on campus all week. Finally, generally (in humanities departments), there is no assignment to submit other than a final essay, which is 100% worth your grade. There are pros and cons to this which I will discuss later. Basically, this lack of assignments means that all of your graduate work is done independently. The classroom is a time for teacher lectures and group discussions.
Advantages of applying for a doctorate without a master’s degree
The motivations for doing a doctorate right after a bachelor’s degree are mainly to save time and money. In effect, you will essentially complete a year of study. Another benefit of Instant Ph.D. Enrollment is project availability. If you find a project that really interests you, it is unlikely that it will still be available in a year. Therefore, if you avoid a master’s degree and apply directly for a doctorate, your chances of getting the research project before it is available will increase.
Although a master’s degree adds a year to your academic career, it can greatly contribute to your development and could help you prepare for your doctorate.
Alternatives to a Masters in Psychology
A Masters in Psychology isn’t the only path you can take to finish in a helping field.
If you are interested in psychology, you may want to check out other master’s degree programs, such as a master’s degree in social work (MSW), master’s degree in education (M.Ed.), or master’s degree in nursing or . nurse practitioner (RN) programs, which would allow you to specialize in psychiatric nursing.
Increased Earnings Expectations
There is no doubt that most students pursue a master’s degree primarily for the opportunity to increase their salary. And it’s not surprising because, whether we like to admit it or not, a person’s quality of life changes when their salary is high. For this reason, earning a master’s degree is one of the most important choices you can make to improve the quality of your life.
Companies seem to view master’s degree holders as low-risk, high-performing employees. I am of the opinion that you have demonstrated your professional capacity and that you have all the skills required to deliver successful results for their company. They see you as a reliable person who doesn’t need any additional capacity building or training. Employers are much more likely to launch you into a higher position, increasing your compensation. And this is directly related to the best source of income that we have described earlier.
Program without thesis
On the other hand, the program without thesis is simpler. It is not necessary to write a thesis. You can enjoy a more focused learning environment. Class sizes tend to be smaller. You may need to take regular tests. There will also be a long list of readers. The curriculum is less rigorous for students intending to enter the working world directly.
Collaborations and internships can often be carried out within the framework of a program with or without thesis. You will be able to gain real-world experience on your course of study. You can read, write and complete essays and tests. You can also complete field experience logs.
