Disease transmitted by ticks. Brain disorders. Increased demands for clean and sustainable water. Washington State University graduate students are finding solutions to these problems — and more — with support from the Washington Research Foundation. And thanks to the foundation’s latest gift, emerging scientists at WSU and UW will be supported for years to come.
The Washington Research Foundation (WRF) recently awarded $1.65 million to support the Seattle Chapter of the ARCS Foundation’s endowments held at WSU and UW, with plans to fund annual awards indefinitely. ARCS scholars at both universities.
What is the difference between a master’s with and without a thesis?
A thesis is a common requirement in many research-intensive fields, but not all master’s programs will require you to complete one. Additionally, some fields allow you to choose between a thesis track and a non-thesis track. In the case of a non-thesis program, you will not have to write a long article, but you will have to take several courses to meet your degree requirements.
Whether you choose a program with or without thesis, you will still be required to complete a final project to demonstrate your critical thinking skills. If you prefer a non-thesis program, your project could be a capstone project or field experience.
Master’s thesis
The master’s thesis is an important research project that spans several semesters.
It concludes with a thesis likely to be published. The thesis option is suitable for students who intend to do a doctorate in the future or who wish to work in research-intensive jobs.
In this type of Masters, you will have to carry out basic research under the guidance of an academic advisor and contribute to the body of existing work. You will be asked to present your thesis and defend your work before a panel of three advisers. Naturally, a dissertation requires in-depth research into a topic, so if you are naturally curious and want to delve deeper into a certain topic, this should be of interest to you.
What is a thesis?
A thesis is a basic document that a student creates during the last semesters of his program based on the research he has carried out on a subject related to his specialization. These are often their current professional interests and/or future ambitions. In writing a dissertation, students reflect on what they have learned during their program. Before a thesis is accepted, the student must defend it orally before a selected faculty of their college, essentially providing a compelling summary of the main points and conclusions of their work. The thesis varies in length but is usually 60 pages or more.
The research experience you gain by writing a thesis can be an asset if you want to work as a researcher or in any professional role with a strong research component. A thesis is also recommended for those wishing to pursue doctoral studies after completing the master’s degree. Many master’s graduates publish their theses in academic or other periodicals, which will help them gain authority in a specific academic field.
