PhD Salary Types
There are three types of PhD salary:
- Higher Education Assistants (GTA). In exchange for a salary, you are expected to help teach one or more courses over several years. This includes, but is not limited to, grading student tutorials, supervising lab experiments, and assisting college students during office hours. - Research support (AR). In exchange for a salary, you help a regional professor with his research. Ideally, the professor you work with should also be your thesis advisor and the research you are asked to support is linked to your own PhD project.
- Stipend through a scholarship: a stipend is non-reimbursable aid granted by doctoral students to support their studies. Unlike higher education or research assistantships, they are rarely assigned salaries. The only expectation of receiving a stipend is that you maintain continuous progress on your degree.
