So you have passed your secondary school and university studies, and higher education for young people would be just as easy. Long story short, a completely different and even tougher ball game is taking its toll on you – but it’s too late to get out!
Higher education is much more demanding than high school and college combined. This requires being 100% all the time, especially during tests and exams. You can’t do it this time; You should come to class prepared.
Is a doctorate intellectually difficult?
You’ve probably heard the metaphor of standing on the shoulders of giants, and it’s true that as a PhD student, you rely on previous work in the field. One does not usually expect to make enormous intellectual progress. In reality, you are probably going to give a small boost to a small part of the field. For some people this can be a relief and make the original research idea much more accessible, while for others it can derail the whole research idea!
The reality is that graduate students can be seen as a profitable workforce for the advancement of science. Although we often work on projects with complex and extremely clear descriptions such as “nanoparticles filled with silver ions for the treatment of cancer” or “biphasic smearing mechanics for soft technical materials”, genetic intelligence is not required to be practical. Often, behind those big content titles, you’re doing some pretty abnormal stuff. These tasks require you to know what you are doing, but you have rarely developed it yourself.
Video Interviews
Instead of more typical alumni interviews, some colleges (Notably Brown and UChicago) allow you to submit a short video instead. Like a traditional job interview, this video is designed to project your voice to admissions officers and let them know what’s important to you. If you are a committed speaker or think you will shine in an interview, or if you want to show off your videographer skills, this is a great option for you.
All videos submitted must meet the following technical specifications (see school website for current requirements: Brown, UChicago):
Job Disadvantages Getting
- There is also time pressure, breeder trials have deadlines and they need your results to continue their work.
- You may have to get used to “sharing” research with a team. You still need to ask for help to get into your system.
- Your research cannot be published while you are working. If you want to work as a researcher at a university later, this is difficult because you have no published research to your name.
Now that you’ve read all the pros and cons, it’s up to you to make your choice. Are you curious about jobs in the business world? Then take a look at our vacancies page. Who knows, you might soon be Jordy’s co-worker, Valerio, or one of the many other Seed Valley employees.
• Ask questions
Before you start your doctorate, you must ask as many questions as possible. Consult your peers, professors, supervisors and whoever else you can.
You can also go on the internet about this and see other people’s experiences. You will only find out how much choice you have in different aspects of the thesis when you educate yourself. Don’t wait for your guidance counselors to come up with a plan for you.
