Thesis Statement Formula

The formula for writing a thesis statement is as simple as a + b = c, where “a” = the main point of your essay, “b ” = how this is done/shows the point, and “c” = your thesis. Take your essay, turn it over, shake it and see what points land on the table: examine them individually and as a whole. What is the main idea they tell you? This will be your main point.

Now, how do you join these points? What sustains them? Evidence, a series of logical results, a philosophical principle, knowledge? Either way, include it in your thesis statement!

Types of thesis statements

Depending on whether your article is analytical, expository, or argumentative, your statement has a slightly different purpose.

An analytical article breaks down a problem or idea into its component parts, evaluates the components, and presents an evaluation of this breakdown to the reader.

These articles may examine art, music, literature, current or historical events, political views, or scientific research. Thus, an analytic thesis statement is usually the result of such an analysis, for example, of a literary work (“Heathcliff should be seen as a hero rather than a villain”) or as a process (“he is the number one challenge employers face . the balance between selecting the best candidates and hiring them before they are plundered by the competition”), or even the latest research (“being hungry increases life, according to science”). In the remainder of the document, you should explain how you conducted the analysis that led to the indicated result and how you reached your conclusion, presenting data and evidence.

When it is written wrong and how to change it

The most common mistake that weakens the force of the thesis statement in the essay is making a descriptive thesis instead of an argumentative thesis.

A description is a statement that simply mentions the topic but does not present a statement or main points.
