A closing sentence is the closing sentence. Every paragraph needs an ending. That closes the door to the paragraph! This is the base of the burger!
- Summarize the main ideas or sentiment of a paragraph.
- The paragraph is not a relevant detail.
- Repeat the main sentence.
- Use “riveter” to get creative with the final sentence! (question, mood, enthusiasm or thinking about the future)
Common problem
We often hear that writing emails in English takes too long A solution that works for many people is to start creating a “toolbox” of useful phrases. A toolbox is a simple idea: just start keeping a list of common and useful phrases, perhaps on your desk or in a notebook next to your keyboard? There’s nothing wrong with reusing common expressions if it saves you time and communicates clearly. You probably already have 2-3 phrases that you use over and over again.
But sometimes the tone isn’t right, right? To help you find the right words when you need them, here are 20 great email closing phrases. As you read, ask yourself two simple questions:
- Thank you for your help. /time/help/support
- I really appreciate the help. /time/help/support that you have given me.
- Thanks again for your help in this matter.
This is where we revisit the idea of a closing sentence and examine it further. We explain why authors use conclusions… primarily to conclude and let the reader know that the paragraph or essay is coming to an end.
We also talked about what makes a good decision versus what makes a weak or bad decision. Strong conclusions are similar to the topic sentence but not too similar. Strong conclusions focus on the big idea of the paragraph and NOT one of the smaller details. There are also firm conclusions on the subject. No new ideas are introduced here.
Loops
Think of the final sentence as the last step of a loop. A cycle begins with a start, then continues with several successive actions, and finally ends, before starting again. Whatever cycle you choose (life cycle, seasonal cycle, water cycle), there is always an end, a kind of conclusion.
When you talk to someone on the phone for the first time, you say “hi” and ask how she is. Then the conversation takes place, information is given and received, and plans are made (“I’ll be in town Thursday. Shall we meet for coffee?”). At the end of this conversation, most people repeat these plans (“So I’ll see you Thursday at noon”) and say goodbye. It is not really necessary to repeat. And goodbye is just a word. The dial tone would clearly let someone know that the conversation is over! And yet, if you’ve ever ended your conversation without a summary, you may have taken a moment to review the plans that were discussed. And if you’ve ever talked to someone who hung up without saying goodbye, you probably felt a little upset. As you can see, these last words help reinforce what has been discussed and politely end the conversation.
