Introduction
Understanding the academic titles and ranking hierarchy of UK universities is essential if you want to get your PhD off to a good start. It’s a shame that this is also a subject that is often forgotten and rarely explained well anywhere. With that in mind, we’ve outlined the common academic titles, what they mean, and where they fit in the overall hierarchy.
It is important to note that not all UK universities use the same terminology for academic titles. In fact, more and more universities are adapting some of these titles to their own versions. This is particularly true of Russell Group universities such as the London School of Economics (LSE) and University College London (UCL). Despite this, they are still similar to their more traditional titles, so the position and academic rank of the employee can be distinguished.

80% OF ALL POSTDOCTORS EXPECT A CAREER IN RESEARCH, BUT ONLY 33% OR LESS WORK IN RESEARCH
To examine the expectations and needs of postdocs, we conducted a Belgian survey ( Belgian postdoc survey 2012). We received comments from 413 postdocs from all scientific fields in Belgian universities.
Surprisingly, almost 80% of all postdoctoral fellows hoped to pursue a career in academia, although only about 10% will succeed in higher education.
Step 4: Write a thesis
Doctorate. As a general rule, students must write a thesis. These documents are often between 150 and 300 pages.
Before writing the thesis, the candidates carry out research in their own field. Depending on the discipline, this may include field research, visiting archives, creating databases and/or conducting surveys. The candidates then write a number of chapters which they submit to their supervisor for comments.
